Parent Education Sessions
These one-off 1 hour sessions are
open to everyone – babies too – and are held all over Wellington including in
Karori at St Ninian’s Church Hall, on the corner of Karori Road and Newcombe
Crescent. They are held during the
week and tend to be at lunchtime. Topics include:
- Introducing Solids – when to start solids, first
foods, continuing with milk feeds and progressing to family meals
- Caring for your Child’s Teeth – facilitated by a
Dental Therapist
- Sleep – a review of typical sleep patterns from
birth until pre-school and will include strategies to improve sleep
patterns
- Podiatry – a podiatrist discusses normal
development for growing feet including guidelines for buying children’s
shoes
- Toilet Training – looks at planning for toilet
training and realistic expectations
- CPR.

sessions are free - although a gold coin donation is appreciated to help
cover expenses.

Karori Plunket Toddler Development Course
Karori Plunket Committee
organises an annual Toddler Development Course, normally held in May. Guest speakers speak on topics such as
toilet training, childhood illnesses, language development, CPR, podiatry,
dental care, use of medicines, reading to your child and learning through
play.

PEPE – Parent Education Programme
This free, Plunket-led
programme is offered at various locations within Wellington and comprises 4
courses which are open to parents, grandparents, whanau and other caregivers;
Your New Baby - Parenting in the first six weeks
This short Parenting course:-
- Runs in the
antenatal period preparing first time parents (including adoptive and step-parents)
for parenting in the first six weeks of their baby’s life
- Complements
ante-natal courses, which aim to prepare expectant parents for labour
and birth
- Introduces parents
to:-
- The characteristics
and needs of babies in the first six weeks of life
- A beginning
knowledge of how parents can help meet their baby’s needs
- Ideas for dealing
with the adjustments, changes and challenges their new baby will bring
- Written resources
that they can refer to when their baby is born
- The importance of
developing social support networks
Your Growing Baby - Parenting from 6 weeks to 1 year
This parenting course:-
- Promotes positive
infant-parent/caregiver relationships
- Promotes knowledge
and understanding of the needs of babies aged 6 weeks to 1 year
- Supports parents,
families and whanau to decide on courses of action that will promote
safety and security in their infant
- Helps parents build
confidence as positive parents/caregivers
- Facilitates the
development of social support networks
- Runs as a series of
four weekly two hour sessions with a further two follow-up sessions
six-to-eight weeks later
Your Active Toddler - Parenting from 1 to 2 years
Your Curious Pre-schooler - Parenting from 2 to 3 years
These two separate parenting courses give parents/caregivers/whanau the
opportunity to:-
- Explore parenting
issues and challenges
- Build on existing
parenting knowledge and strengths
- Provide an
opportunity to meet other parents with toddlers
The groups will meet for 2 hours every week for 3 weeks.
All the courses are being held in various suburbs throughout Wellington and
the Hutt Valley, including Karori. If
